Meraki
Matthew Peña 2023.
The artwork for Meraki was created using the visual medium of photograms. I created these pieces in the darkroom at East Los Angeles College during an intro black and white photography course in Spring 2023. Throughout the process, I experimented with various techniques, utilizing organic elements from nature, tulle, and transparent paper. A significant process was adjusting development times to achieve a feeling aligned with mysticism and the unknown.
Engaging in this creative process often allowed me to disconnect completely from the outside world and allowed me to ponder the questions of time and our existence. In our age of extreme digital stimulation, working in the darkroom became meditative and peaceful. I frequently found myself in hyper-focused states; touching, refining, and experimenting with the lab chemicals, exposure times, and different materials to discover the pieces I enjoyed most.
During this period, I was also writing and refining the music for my LP Meraki. Interestingly, at the time, I had no intention of using these photograms as artwork for the record. Concurrently, I was enrolled in a philosophy course, and through studies I discovered the Greek term "Meraki" (μεράκι), which means to do something with complete passion and love, often related to a task or creative endeavor. This concept deeply resonated with me and ultimately became the essence and title of the album.
